Midwife’s Herball Middelheim / The Virtues

The Virtues are twelve banners for twelve anti-fertility plants that make up the Midwife’s Herball of Middelheim. The embroideries on each of the banners, stitched onto ‘pockets’ that resemble a uterus and ovaries, are made by Wessam Ashour and Louzan Khalikova. The illustrations are taken from woodcuts made for Leonhart fuch’s The New Herbal (1543) and reproduced in Rembert Dodoens’Cruydeboeck (1554)
