The midwife known as Maaij Claesje was born in Angola and spent her life in Cape Town. She was enslaved as a child, trafficked by the Portuguese, taken captive by the V.O.C. and held by the V.O.C. as an enslaved person in their various slave lodges at the Cape from 1658 until her emancipation in 1689.
