Chabi / Cabung was given the scientific name of Lapeirousia jacquinii.
The genus Lapeirousia was described by clergyman and botanist Pierre André Pourret (1754-1818) who named the genus in honour of his friend, the botanist Philippe-Isidore de Lapeyrouse (1744-1818) a French naturalist who was particularly interested in the flora of the Pyrenees. Neither Pourret nor Lapeyrouse ever set foot in the Cape.
The species name honours Baron Nikolaus Joseph von Jacquin who was an 18th century professor of chemistry and botany in Vienna. He too had no connection with the Cape.
